Even the poetic descriptions of the marsh started to irk me and Kya becomes just a sad and ordinary person who clings to past hurts and grudges. There has to be someone in the outlier club and this time it is me. With that in mind, when I started this, the only thing I knew about it was its hype – I knew zero about the story, genre, type of book, etc. “I’ve never seen anything like this in 30 years,” Jaci Updike, president of sales for Penguin Random House, told The New York Times. I really enjoyed this book as an easy light read and an interesting story.

Easy to read, yet another story of the wide discrepancies in American society and how the under privileged overcomes seemingly insurmountable obstacles. There would be very few authors writing the same type off book. Possibly representative of the tim. And now I'm grateful that my library forced me to get to know Kya at last!
